Part of my male series I'm really interested in Miike's use of symbolism and how his stylisation extends to the actual mise-en-scene, producing some pretty surreal Robin Big Brother and I'm admittedly fascinated at After Earth Kinox sheer homoeroticism on display here -- the relationship between Jun and Kuzuki has so much potential to be so good, but King Of Devil's Island might not have a single ounce of Thau in its entire running time but it's an exercise in fine filmmaking to still make it a more than worthwhile watch. I already knew that Japanese auteur Takashi Miike is full of N,Tv and known for an almost comedically versatile style, but this?

Of the two Miike I've seen, I was only a little more than half convinced by Gozu, but this one is the shit. It's beautifully filmed and sympathetic to its characters, but simultaneously, it feels like one of Miike's bleakest works, in its own way.

I think I'm too dumb to fully comprehend what is even happening in this film, but on the other hand I love Ryuhei Matsuda so Miike's most visually stunning film from what I've seen.

Also one of his most cryptic and challenging films. Coming off of Izo the year before, it seems Miike has entered the most experimental and phase of his career.

These films are not only conceptually different that his other films, but they play a lot with film structure.

Where Izo had a character literally moving through time, this film moves through time itself. It bounces around within the time frame of the narrative, often retracing itself.

Perhaps his ability to make commercially successful films has allowed Miike, at this point, to take greater chances with his smaller works.

This is a really cool film. If you want a more experimental and serious side of Miike, this film comes recommended. The film has its share of weird moments, but all the weirdness does seem to serve a higher, more artistic goal.

So far Miike hasn't been able to match Big Bang Love, Juvenile A and as he slowly shifted towards more commercial cinema I wonder if he will ever be able to top it, but whatever the future brings, Miike clearly demonstrated that he has skills that transcend the realm of obscure genre film making.

Full review: www. They give you tranquility. There are too many things in the world that make you angry and restless, so movies that help you sleep are important.

Part of my male series. I'm really interested in Miike's use of symbolism and how his stylisation extends to the actual mise-en-scene, producing some pretty surreal sets; and I'm admittedly fascinated at the sheer homoeroticism on display here -- the relationship between Jun and Kuzuki has so much potential to be so good, but Maybe the nonlinear narrative is to blame, as we're constantly snapping back and forth in the timeline and revisiting some things several times throughout, becoming tedious and, in a sense, lost.

I can't pretend to care for anyone in the film or their actions except in the thematic sense my module is requiring me to do. I can't imagine Miike's ever really going….

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. My new favourite Miike film with violence that is always fuelled by pure passion.

This dystopian set was a force to be reckoned with. I want to grasp the central key of the film and with all honesty, there are some things that I missed out and hopefully reading other reviews would help me understand it more.

I specifically watch this for Ryuhei Matsuda and in this film. Watching this film feels like it was in a dystopian kind and the minimal approach of the setting somehow helps the character's dealings with their conflicts, and there are parts that seem like it was a play but you will realize that it….

Maybe the most bizarre Miike film I've seen. A strange, homoerotic, kinda depressing, yet beautiful mystery about a murderer being murdered in prison.

Sound weird? Well, it is pretty weird, but it's honestly done so seamlessly that at points it starts to feel like a regular drama. Until, of course, you get to more weird visuals of a pyramid and a rocket ready for launch, Dutch angles within other Dutch angles, and 4th wall breaks with you the audience seeming to be the one interrogating the suspects.

Those are just some of the weirder aspects of the movie, but somehow it all ends up working, and it ends up being one of Takashi Miike's more emotional movies.

There is a…. Takashi Miike's queer works are strange mixes of borderline stupid plot with insufferably annoying visual flair but they somehow still mange to produce something genuinely touching and intimate.

In this case, I wish "Big Bang Love, Juvenile A" could focus less on half-assed detective investigation bullshit and more on relationship drama.

In only ten minutes near the end of the film, it elevates the familiar idea of "the act of killing someone as a profession of love as well as a manifestation of possessing them" to deeply poignant and startling effects.

Image what "Big Bang" can become if the script has more interest in the "Love" in the title? The film had a lot of great shots but apart from that was incredibly boring, I found all of the characters to be very one dimensional and revisiting earlier scenes later on in the film from different perspective was a interesting idea but ended up feeling very repetitive and sleep inducing.

I am sensing that I missed out on some deep philosophical subtext about the universe an our place in it while I was drifting in and out of consciousness.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, but still want to squeeze a film into your daily routine, this list is made for…. Step One : Go to www.

Step Two : Pick a Number. Constantly updating. If you know of something I should add, or I added something erroneously here, please let me know….

My previous long time YouTube account got unjustly permanently suspended for no discernible reason whatsoever. I had to start…. A collection of queer characters, representations, and sensibilities on film.

From queer masterpieces to camp classics, documentaries to romantic comedies,….

This was very well done and well acted. The story is based on real events. This is a funny follow up to short term The opposite end of the spectrum for reformatories of wayward kids.

This time all boys, set in , with a dictator for the headmaster. This plays very close to a prison movie. It has great drama and intense villains.

But it failed to move me the way it did before. I'm drawn in by the characters but it still missed me by an inch. Idk what it is.

Maybe I'm just getting too old to appreciate these stories. I did like the clear cut villains in this and think it's easier to push back against oppression in a world like this.

This is the coup and overthrow of a harsh and uncaring dictator. Not a feeble democratic push that never gets anything done.

Never heard of this place or its history. Terrific movie. Acting, writing, cinematography all good. Can't go wrong with Stellan Skarsgaard.

Squeaky snow too. Review by john. I once saw a whale swim with three harpoons in it. It took the entire day to die. He was weak due to the harpoon I shot him with.

And covered with scars from all the battles he had fought. Go Norway?!
